Joseph began his career in laboratory science — trained in precision, observation, and the patience that breakthrough research demands. It was on a solo expedition to Kilimanjaro in 2017 that everything changed.
Armed with a borrowed camera and a desire to document what he saw, Joseph discovered his true calling: telling Africa's stories in full cinematic resolution. That summit attempt — captured in freezing temperatures with failing batteries — became the genesis of Ratel Production.
Named after the honey badger (Mellivora capensis), Africa's most fearless and persistent creature, Ratel Production embodies the tenacity required to film at altitude, in the wild, and in the most demanding conditions. We don't just visit these locations — we endure them alongside our clients.

Nine Years of
Chasing Light
Every great story has an unlikely beginning. Ours began at 5,895 metres above sea level, on the frozen crater rim of Kilimanjaro, with a borrowed camera in hand and batteries failing in the cold.
Joseph Mwangi — a laboratory scientist by training, an observer by instinct — had not planned to become a filmmaker. He had planned to summit Africa's highest peak, document it for personal memory, and return to the sterile precision of research life. What he captured instead was something no experiment could predict: the raw, wordless power of a continent seen from its rooftop at dawn. The footage was imperfect. The composition was instinctive. The emotion was undeniable. Standing at the summit with frost on the lens and tears blurring his vision, Joseph made a decision that would change everything — this is the work.
The Honey Badger Is Born
Ratel Production was formally established in Arusha — a city caught between the ancient rhythms of the Maasai steppe and the modern pulse of East African commerce. The name was deliberate: Mellivora capensis, Africa's most fearless creature, willing to face a lion for what it values. Within months, international safari lodges were signing contracts.
The First Kilimanjaro Film
The Lemosho Route — eight days, five climate zones, one complete cinematic arc from rainforest to glacial summit. Joseph led a full camera crew to 5,500m+, deploying drones above the clouds and achieving aerial footage that had never been captured at that altitude over Tanzania. The resulting documentary earned international attention.
Ratel Legacy Opens Its Doors
A global pandemic halted the world — but not the work of storytelling. Ratel launched the Legacy division: a dedicated arm for weddings, corporate media, brand films, and portrait photography. Investment in 8K cinema cameras and cinema-grade prime lenses transformed the Arusha studio into a full-service production facility.

Arusha's First Podcast Studio
Ratel opened the region's first professionally equipped podcast and broadcast interview studio — a response to the explosive growth of content creation across East Africa. Acoustic treatment, broadcast lighting, and multi-camera setups now serve NGOs, tech founders, cultural leaders, and international brands. The studio has since produced dozens of series distributed globally on major streaming platforms.
Tanzania's Premier Cinematic House
Today, Ratel Production operates across 12+ countries, four continents, and every terrain East Africa offers — from the salt flats of Lake Natron to the coral reefs of Zanzibar. Conservation documentaries screen at international festivals. Wedding films are watched and rewatched for decades. And every project carries the same belief Joseph held at the summit: this moment will not be forgotten.

Joseph and his team filmed our Kilimanjaro summit attempt and delivered something beyond our wildest expectations. They summited alongside us in -15°C conditions, never missing a shot. The film moved people to tears at our charity gala.
Our luxury safari lodge has worked with many production companies across Africa. Ratel stands alone. The aerial footage of the Serengeti wildebeest migration they captured has been used in three international campaigns.
